ABC Upfronts 2013

Another year, another exciting upfronts. ABC has made some really great additions to its lineup over the years but the real question is: Which show will be my new Desperate Housewives?

Back in the Game – Wednesdays 7:30pm CST
Premise:
Former softball player with daddy issues, gets divorced and moves back into her dad’s house with her son who sucks at baseball. Then, she coaches the team of kids rejected from the baseball team.

Could I get through the three-minute trailer?:
 no
On After:
The Middle
Up Against: Survivor, Revolution (how in the hell is this back?), The X Factor, Arrow
Reaction: James Caan is enjoyable, but this premise is boring and pales in comparison to their other comedies.
UpfrontPrediction: No to Season 2

Back in the Game Trailer

Betrayal – Sundays 9:00pm CST
Premise:
DA (I can only assume. . .or some attorney for the city)’s wife is cheating on him with a hot defense attorney. And uh oh! They’re gonna have to face each other in a big deal trial!

Could I get through the three-minute trailer?: Yes
On After: Revenge
Up Against: The Mentalist, Sunday Night Football, Local News
Reaction: It’s filmed in Chicago, so I’m definitely rooting for its success. I’m hoping it moves beyond the longing and guilty looks though. We get it, you feel badly. It’s also gonna have to find something other than this affair to deal with.
UpfrontPrediction: Yes to Season 2

Betrayal. . .er

The Goldbergs – Tuesdays 8:00pm CST
Premise:
It’s 1985 and a family of five is dealing with normal family things. Except it’s the ’80s!
Excited to watch or blog about?:
 Blog
Could I get through the three-minute trailer?:
 Yes
On After:
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Up Against: NCIS: Los Angeles, The Voice, New Girl, Supernatural
Reaction: It reminded me of The Wonder Years, but with a little less heart. You can tell it won’t just be REO Speedwagon and crimping references, but it does seem to lean heavily on “Hey look, it’s the ’80s!”, instead of letting it just be the backdrop. If the episodes have more of a focus on relationship, I think it’ll be ok.
UpfrontPrediction: No to Season 2

The Goldbergs trailer

Lucky 7 – Tuesdays 9:00pm CST
Premise:
A bunch of gas station coworkers really need to win the lottery and hey! they do! Except the one guy who didn’t pay into the pool.

Could I get through the three-minute trailer?:
 No
On After:
Trophy Wife (new)
Up Against: Person of Interest, Chicago Fire
Reaction: Remember how on Lost, Hurley won the lottery, but then his life was anything but lucky. I expect this show to expound on that idea. Except in a super cheesy/boring way.
UpfrontPrediction: No to Season 2

Lucky 7 trailer

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – Tuesdays 7:00pm CST
Premise:
Looks like agents assembled to protect people/find superheroes in a post-WW3 type America. They’re all very attractive and super smart.
Excited to watch or blog about?:
Watch
Could I get through the three-minute trailer?:
 yes
On After:
Local programming
Up Against: NCIS, Biggest Loser, Dads/Brooklyn Nine-Nine (both new), The Originals (new)
Reaction: Looks really well produced. Not entirely sure what was going on, but caught lots of cheesy action-movie jokes. It’s from Joss Whedon, so I’m sure it’ll premiere with a hefty fanboy audience, at least.
UpfrontPrediction: Yes to Season 2

Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. trailer

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland – Thursdays 7:00pm CST
Premise:
Alice in Wonderland is in a mental institution because she still believes her fantasies as a child are true. She also fell in love with a genie who may have died, and she’s on the hunt to find him.
Excited to watch or blog about?:
Watch
Could I get through the three-minute trailer?:
 Yes
On After:
Local programming
Up Against: Big Bang Theory/The Millers (new), Parks & Rec/Welcome to the Family (new), The X Factor, The Vampire Diaries
Reaction: I was riveted and I love Alice in Wonderland. I don’t watch Once Upon a Time, but will their audience have an appetite for another show? We’ll find out!
UpfrontPrediction: Yes to Season 2

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland trailer

Super Fun Night – Wednesdays 8:30pm CST
Premise: Three girlfriends are super awkward and stay in together every night (complete with nightly agenda). One gets invited out and physical comedy ensues.
Excited to watch or blog about?: Blog
Could I get through the three-minute trailer?: Yes
On After: Modern Family (wut.)
Up Against: Criminal Minds, The X Factor, Law & Order: SVU, The Tomorrow People
Reaction: It’s pretty much just Rebel Wilson doing her thing. Lots of under-her-breath lines and physical humor. It doesn’t look like there’s more to this show, but maybe it’ll surprise me. Also, Conan is an exec producer on it, which gives me hope that it was just a crappy trailer.
UpfrontPrediction: No to Season 2

Super Fun Night trailer

Trophy Wife  Tuesdays 8:30pm CST
Premise: A guy’s third (and hot) wife is struggling to gain respect from his kids and other ex wives.
Excited to watch or blog about?: Watch
Could I get through the three-minute trailer?: Yes
On After: The Goldbergs
Up Against: NCIS: Los Angeles, The Voice, The Mindy Project, Supernatural
Reaction: I could see this concept otherwise falling flat, but this show has a great cast. Malin Ackerman can sell the crazy pretty, yet relatable woman. I don’t understand why they didn’t have Modern Family lead in this show instead.
UpfrontPrediction: Yes to Season 2

And when all else fails. . .the mid-season replacements:

Killer Women
Premise: A lady is a Texas Ranger (law enforcement, not baseball), and has implicit instructions not to cross the border into Mexico. So she does exactly that to find a mother and daughter. Lots of guns and naked boobies ensue.
Excited to watch or blog about?: Blog
Could I get through the three-minute trailer?: Yes
Reaction: Meh. They’re trying too hard to make her tough, but also sleep with hot fellow law enforcement types. If you’ve seen any of the Charlie’s Angels movies, there’s nothing new or exciting here.
UpfrontPrediction: No to Season 2

Killer Women (all new shows at bottom)

Mind Games
Premise: Two brothers use psychological tactics to get people to do what their clients want.
Excited to watch or blog about?: Watch
Could I get through the three-minute trailer?: Yes
Reaction: It combines three of my favorite things: Chicago, social psychology, and Steve Zahn. I love the idea of seeding ideas to get what you want. . .so many mini social experiments! Excited for this one!
UpfrontPrediction: Yes to Season 2

Mind Games trailer (all shows at bottom)

Mixology
Premise: We spend a season of TV watching one night in a douche bar with the worst people you’ve never met.
Excited to watch or blog about?: Blog
Could I get through the three-minute trailer?: Yes
Reaction: Gross. These guys are assholes or idiots, and the women are awful. Why would I want to follow a night of people who are terrible?
to Season 2
UpfrontPrediction: No to Season 2

Mixology trailer (all shows at bottom)

Resurrection
Premise: Kid was found in a field in China. He takes the Federal Agent to his parents’ house, and they’re shocked. . because he died 32 years ago!
Excited to watch or blog about?: Watch
Could I get through the three-minute trailer?: Yes
Reaction: I love things that play on our perception of time/space. The trailer promised I’d “question everything”, to which I say “meh.” But, I think it’ll at least be interesting. Also, I heard some Michael Giacchinoesque scoring. . .it’s not on IMDB yet, so I’m not sure if we’ll get the same violin tension we enjoyed in Lost, but I’m hopeful!
UpfrontPrediction: Yes to Season 2

Resurrection trailer (all shows at bottom)

All in all, a solid mix from ABC. Not too many dogs – they just may need to shuffle the schedule to give the best shows the best chance of succeeding. . .
